Good morning, Spokane!
Happy Memorial Day!
It's 79 and a bit overcast out there today, which is honestly perfect weather whether you're heading to a ceremony or firing up the grill. Spokane had quite the weekend, from mountain bikers pedaling through the night at Riverside State Park to preschoolers placing flags on veterans' graves. Here's your catch-up.
In today's Spokane Pulse:
Indigenous Eats scores a $20K national grant
A marmot that outsmarted three traps in a Spokane attic

And much more!
Let's get to it.

Weekend Roundup
🍽️ Spokane's own Indigenous Eats was awarded a $20,000 grant through the American Express Shop Small Grants Program, one of roughly 500 restaurants selected nationwide. The fry bread taco spot, founded by Jenny and Andrew Slagle in 2022, was ranked the fourth-best new restaurant in the country by USA Today readers in 2024.
🇺🇸 Preschoolers from the Northeast Youth Center honored fallen veterans for the eighth consecutive year by placing American flags and pennies on graves at Fairmount Memorial Park on Friday. A penny left on a veteran's headstone means someone stopped by to pay their respects.
🚴 Hundreds of mountain bikers filled Riverside State Park this weekend for the fifth annual 24 Hours of Riverside, a nonstop endurance race covering a 14-mile loop of singletrack and technical climbs. Solo riders, teams of up to 10, and a Kid's Bike Parade kept the energy going around the clock.
🏃 The annual Race to Remember 5K wound through Fairmount Memorial Park on Saturday, with runners passing more than 1,500 American flags along the course. Proceeds benefit Beyond the Call of Duty, supporting families of fallen first responders and veterans.
🐿️ A marmot chewed through a Spokane-area home's roof, broke through wildlife screening, made a second entrance after the first was sealed with metal, and dodged three traps before finally being caught. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife says small mammals looking for nesting spots are common this time of year.
